Polygamy'S Impact

Muslims around the world and members of the FLDS ( fundamentalist Mormons) practice polygamy both legally and illegally. The first part of this essay focuses on polygamy and gender inequality.

Through out history there has been male domination in all societies except in a few matriarchal societies. Men argue that women are inferior to men. A women does not have the strength of the male, nor the competence, therefore she is inferior and not considered equal to a man. Therefore it is in a woman’s interest to allow a man, whether it is her father, husband, or brother, to determine her future.

Women face discrimination in many forms. In the workplace they receive less pay than a man in the same position. Positions and promotions are not as favorable for women. In many countries around the world the laws have been formed to suppress women’s rights.  In some countries women are not able to seek divorce for physical abuse, unless there is an eyewitness that can testify on her behalf.

In addition to this, women and teenage girls are discriminated against because of their age, looks, weight, height, and whether they are dressed appropriately and their level of education.

In the Islamic world, discrimination is often justified by old Islamic traditions. Children often go to the male after a divorce and in some countries if a native woman marries a foreigner the child does not have the right of being a citizen of the woman’s country.

A study in Nigeria identified 5 reasons for men to have more than one wife, because having more than one wife allows the husband to:  1- have the many children the male desires;  2- it would heighten his prestige and boost his ego among his peers;   3- enhance the males status in the community;  4- ensure a sufficient number of laborers for farm work, household work, etc;  5- satisfy the males sexual urges.

Another reason is to increase the household income. These are the main reasons in addition to other reasons.

Because there are many different Muslim cultures inside and outside of the USA with differing problems created by living in polygamy I have chosen to  list the major problems that are common in all groups as well as also listing problems created in the FLDS  group and other US groups practicing polygamy.

One of the biggest negatives for a boy or any child, is if the father has two or more wives and more than 10 children it is difficult to remember the child’s name and the father will usually say, “who is your mother?” There is not much of a relationship between the fathers and their children. It is really important for the boys to have a role model. This is true with the Muslims and the FLDS. Even the relationships with the mothers is strained and fleeting because of the number of children and additional wives in the home. There is also competition between the children for the attention from the father and mother. The wives also compete for attention from the husband.

For girls, if there is a divorce the children usually go with the father, which means they loose the relationship with the natural mother and usually end up being raised by a step mother who cares little for the child. The child, if a stepchild, could become a bride in waiting for the stepfather. In the FLDS community the children usually remain with the parent that stays in the community. If a woman leaves the community with a child every effort will be made to find the child and to return the child to the polygamous community.

The children receive little schooling and are used as laborers in the field and home usually without any pay. They are also given little time to socialize with each other and the boys and girls are usually kept apart in the FLDS community. In the FLDS community children are indoctrinated into the faith and are usually kept from learning anything about the evil outside world.

Polygamy’s impact on the FLDS critics and have been investigated for child abuse because their leader, Warren Jeffs, has been quoted as saying, “if a girl wants to play with a doll give her a baby and if a boy wants to ride a bicycle give him a shovel.”  Girls as young as 12 have been forced to marry an older man, sometimes even a stepfather. Girls generally are not given a choice as to when they will marry or to whom.

Polygamy’s impact on Child labor and laws are broken continually by the FLDS and robbing the children of their childhood. The majority of the children being victimized are hidden from view and beyond the reach of law enforcement. Many off the children are denied basic health care, education, adequate nutrition,  and protection and security. Children who work full time and do not attend schools are prevented from developing necessary cognitive skills. Young children who are forced to work for free instead of receiving an education will continue working like slaves for the rest of their lives, essentially brainwashed without opportunity to improve their lives. Not only is child labor problematic because it robs a child of their education, but working can impact a child’s social development because they spend more time working than engaging with peers in social play, learning how to interact properly.

In addition, effects on living in polygamy in the FLDS community for women involve child bearing. At present there is a seed bearer ritual in the FLDS group which does not allow a man to have sex with any of his wives. A seed bearer is an elect man of worthy bloodline chosen by the Priesthood to impregnate the FLDS women. Under this new doctrine the men are no longer permitted to have children with their multiple wives. That privilege belongs to the seed bearer. While the seed bearer does his duty the husband is required to sit in the room holding his wife’s hand while the seed bearer, or couple of seed bearers rape his wife. The seed bearer does wear a hood.

Also in a disciplinary action, a man can be banned from the church and his wives and children can be reassigned to another man. At the present time the leader of the FLDS church is serving a life sentence in prison for marrying and giving in marriage, 12 year old girls.

If you would like to know more about the negative effects of polygamy on women and children, I would suggest looking at the article on the internet where much of the above information was gathered. ‘The Negative Impact of Polygamy on Women and Children in Mormon and Islamic Cultures.’  Natali Exposito. There is much more information on this subject in the article, particularly with the Muslim Culture.  Click here

SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD, a quote from the Bible. How should this be interpreted?

Outside the child abuse polygamy generates, other religious followers also harm children.  In 2014 a woman in Indiana was charged with child abuse for beating her 7 year old son with a coat hanger and leaving over 30 bruises. She claimed she was only following her beliefs garnered from her evangelical teachings and that she was protected under Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. As justification for her behavior, court documents cited the Old Testament book of Proverbs claiming that a parent who spares the rod, spoils the child.

Some conservatives speak about religious liberty as if it is the ultimate trump card. Even if the law prohibits such acts or deems it discriminatory, they say, religious persons should be exempt if the law conflicts with their beliefs the same as related to child abuse polygamy.

Does religious freedom have limits? If so, then surely child abuse exceeds those limits. The lady was correct that the Bible often encourages physical discipline as cited in the above scripture. Unsurprisingly, Evangelical Christians support spanking children at a higher rate than the general population.

But what is a spanking and when does it cross the line? Many parents feel that a slap on the hand or rear is okay, but what about a belt whip or 10 belt whips? What about a whipping with a coat hanger instead of a belt? What about using anything that leaves a bruise or a whelt on the skin? Some feel that punishment should not be administered in anger. S0 what about the notion that a parent should not spank until one is calm, cool and collective. Is there anything in the Bible that talks about punishment not being carried out in anger?

My feelings are that if any discipline is administered it should not leave cuts, bruises or whelts and that the punishment should not be carried out in anger. Also a greater amount of love should be shown towards the child after the discipline lest the child consider you an enemy.

If you would like additional information on disciplining children and religion I would suggest reading the article on religion and child abuse by this author.

YOU HAVE NEVER READ ANTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE! Hi, this is Professor Carole Western. My book The Power of Polygamy was written to cover most of the main polygamist groups, what they believe and how they live. The book was written in 2014. Most polygamy books are written by women who have lived or escaped from one of these communities. I wanted to make sure you saw this religion for what it is, a group of different religious sects with different leaders, rules and beliefs.

THE POWER OF POLYGAMY is a revision of my former book ‘Inside the World of Warren Jeffs’, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.  One of the reasons it was nominated besides the content, was because it was a very dangerous undercover operation. Going undercover into these groups and speaking to polygamist women was very risky. In Short Creek for example, I entered hidden in the bed of a truck with a tarp covering me. It was a sweltering day of over 105 degrees. I found a woman who was not a polygamist but was related and aware of polygamy child brides, but who was allowed to visit her sister two times a year. I begged to go along with her. I knew it was risky and there were plenty of men in town carrying weapons. I also knew, if I was caught I could be in real trouble. One of my biggest surprises was how unhappy the ‘spiritual’ (concubine) wives were. They felt degraded by the ‘first’ wife’ and ignored by their husbands until it came to “breeding nights”. All ‘breeding’ night visits were arranged by the ‘first wife’. She kept a calendar of each woman’s ovulations dates. The only other time they saw their husband was for family study nights and punishment. Punishment could range from refusal to do something the ‘first’ wife requested or just voicing a divergent opinion. Some of the punishments were harsh, such as whippings and beatings. Even a minor infraction of the family ‘law’could put a woman in line for punishment. I realize there is a polygamist series on TV which makes polygamy seem a more acceptable lifestyle, but that is not an average polygamist family. Well, it wouldn’t be of course, who would want to watch a series of misery, cruelty, jealousy and child abuse? Now, I cannot swear every man is bedding 12-14 year old girls, but even a handful in each group is more than enough. However, incest rears its ugly head in polygamy child brides, and appears to be an integral part of their lifestyle. It is said that every person in Short Creek is related by blood to every other person in town. Another situation which is also sickening, is men sending their sons away when they become teenagers. This is so they will not be able to compete with their fathers and grandfathers for wives. Presently, Warren Jeffs has forbidden couples in Short Creek to have marital relations, and so few babies have been born. One man told me they have sold many of their cribs and baby clothes because they are not needed anymore. Many members have left the cult because of this new commandment. I also heard rumors Warren Jeffs selected a few men he considered “pure” to impregnate all the young girls. I thought that was a weird idea, until one of the men I met from Short Creek said he knew about it, and a Dr. at Dixie Medical Center said he had delivered babies from 12 year old girls who were pregnant. Unfortunately, most of the babies died. Regardless of what religion, men who like children are pedophiles and THERE IS NO CURE. They might go straight for a while, but they always return to bothering young children. Right now, I am very upset that Warren Jeffs with a 110 year sentence in prison is allowed to meet with the counselors of his church and still run his church. If my church leader abandoned me and fled in disguise with packets of money, I would not take him back. Jeffs behavior is strange as he aspires to believe in Joseph Smith who did not flee, but returned to martyr himself for his beliefs after polygamy child brides. I am surprised that his church members still feel he’s a prophet, after he abandoned them and was caught pretending to be someone else, wearing disguises and carrying packets of credit cards and money. After all the illegal things Jeff’s has done with polygamy child brides and memebers trust, if he was released, they would take him back as their leader with open arms. Now, something I am also angry about, is the fact that WE, THE TAXPAYERS, have to pay for the Spiritual wives and their children that result from polygamy child brides. They obtain Welfare, WIC, child support, medical support, etc. illegally. This polygamy child brides must stop!  Our economy cannot afford to spend millions on people who choose to go on Welfare; when we have more pressing problems in our country with which to deal. Some will say, we have women in our regular communities who have children without fathers and are on Welfare. However, there is a huge difference between a Welfare mother having children; (statistics prove the most they ever have is 4 children) and polygamist women who are expected to deliver a child every 18 months. This means a man with 4 or more wives can have dozens of children in a few years, all of which, we must support. Our cost for their lifestyle, runs into Millions of dollars each year. Now that Gay Marriage has passed in so many States, can polygamy be far behind? Gay couples at least pay their share. Polygamists don’t! We need to be mindful of polygamy as it becomes a subject of discussion, and it will. For those who feel Polygamy will eventually fade away, unfortunately, it has existed in America for at least 100 years. Long before fundamental polygamists, there were polygamous Native Americans and people from other cultures and countries living this lifestyle. All these people feel that to reach their great reward with God, or to become Gods themselves, they must have more than one wife and huge families. This puts a great financial burden on the rest of us. I already know some of you will not agree with me, a few may agree, and many polygamists will be angered by my suggestion that they pay their own way. Polygamists truly believe GOD CREATED THE WELFARE SYSTEM, SO THEY COULD KEEP PRACTICING POLYGAMY, WHICH THEY CONSIDER A COMMAND FROM GOD. I’m sure you realize it is impossible to argue with people who believe they are doing what God wants. Still, as the Welfare System totters near the brink of bankruptcy; will God give us an influx of money on their behalf, or will they have to tighten their belts like the rest of us?

Child Brides On the Utah /Arizona border there are twin polygamous towns called Hillsdale and Colorado City, formerly known as Short Creek. The polygamous group is known as the FLDS Church and is run by Warren Jeffs who is accepted by the group as a Prophet and spokesman for the Lord. Warren is currently serving a life prison sentence for marrying and giving in marriage young girls. Warren was sentenced for marrying a 12 and a 14 year old girl. CHILD BRIDES

What is life like for girls growing up in this community? Doomed to be child brides.

The girls of the FLDS are brought up to be married off at the earliest possible age to be child brides. The Elders pick husbands for them, usually polygamous men who are much older than they. Sometimes these girls are not even aware they are to be married until the day of the marriage. They are given no choice as to whom or when they marry. Some of these girls are as young as 12 years and some are married to men old enough to be their grandfathers. Some even marry their stepfathers.

Many of the boys are expelled from the colony to remove the competition for the young girls. These boys with little education are dropped off in the dessert to fend for themselves. They have little or no knowledge of the outside world and may end up as prostitutes or selling drugs to care for themselves.

These polygamous children are brought up in a secluded, deprived environment. They are given minimal educational opportunities, don’t watch TV, listen to radio, nor go to movies. They are taught that outsiders are satanic and to be avoided. They are very ignorant of the outside world and are taught that forced marriages to older men is normal. They have little or no self esteem.

There are groups that try to rescue women and girls from the community. When a girl tries to run and is stopped the polygamists isolate them away and re-educate them. They may even be moved to another polygamous colony in an other State. When a girl is successful in escaping from the community the polygamists fight very hard to get these girls back. They use threats, intimidation and other methods to get them back. They even have a legal firm on retainer that is used to manipulate the legal system.

From his jail cell Warren jeffs has recently ordered a procreation ritual that married men and their wives are to have no sexual relations. When a woman is ovulating, men ordained as seed bearers are sent to the home to have sex with the wife. The man wears a hood over his face to protect his identity and the husband is forced to be in the room to watch and hold his wifes hand while she is being raped.

It will be interesting to see what effects this new ritual will have on polygamy in this community. It is hard to envision a man wanting to take on more wives and children without the benifit of being the actual father and having relations with his wives.

RAPE Polygamist Prophet SEED BEARERS

Published / by powero21_wp / Leave a Comment

RAPE – Warren Jeffs’ polygamist cult forced men to watch ‘seed bearers’ rape their wives in ‘ritualistic procreation’.

The FLDS polygamist cult led by an imprisoned child rapist banned its men from fathering children and instead forced RAPE POLYGAMYthe men to watch as their wives were raped by ‘seed bearers’.

The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is a breakoff from the Mormon or Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church. The Mormon Church abandoned polygamy in the late 1900s in order to stop persecution and to become a State of the Union. Those who would not accept the end of polygamy left the Church or were eventually excommunicated and formed groups outside the Church. The largest group known as the FLDS, is led by Warren Jeffs, who is presently serving a life sentence for sexually assaulting his child brides.  In one of the most questioned practices, Jeffs has ordained RAPE BY ‘seed bearers’to engage in “ritualistic procreation,” this was done after forbading husbands and wives from touching each other. It is said that the no contact rule was so strict, a couple could not even shake hands and that any form of contact from sex to hugs, could be considered adultry under church rules.  BUT,POLYGAMISTS LEADERS ALLOW RAPE OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

One church sister said that Church Elders selected seed bearers from men that had worthy bloodlines. She also said that it was the husbands responsibility to hold the hands of their wives while the seed bearer spreads his seeds. In other words the husband is required to sit in the room while the seed bearer rapes his wife or wives.

FLDS men are no longer permitted to have children with their wives. That privilege belongs to the seed bearer alone. The sex act is considered a ritualistic procreation performed on a ritualistic bed-slash-alter.

Warren Jeffs was convicted of sex assault in 2011 for raping two church girls ages 12 and 15. He was sentenced for life behind bars.

I question this practice and whether this will stop husbands and wives from having relations or how long it will be before the husbands give into their sexual urges. I also question how long Jeffs will hold to this practice and what effect this will have on the growth of the FLDS cult and the growth of polygamy under this practice. It seems to me that for men polygamy would not be that enticing with the sex being removed. Who would want to take on extra wives without the sexual part of marriage. This could be a downer for polygamy.

Little girls sexual abuse and learning the facts is the first step in preventing child and little girls sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse is far more prevalent than people realize and the crisis of little girls sexual abuse at a level more harmful than ever before.  About one in seven girls will be sexually abused before they turn 18.  The public is not fully aware of the problem as only about 38% of child victims or little girls sexual abuse victims disclose the fact that they have been sexually abused.

Who are the little girl sexual perpetrators and child abusers?  Image result for LITTLE GIRLS AND BOYS

The fact is those who molest children look and act just like everyone else. There are people who have or will sexually abuse children in churches, schools, and youth sports leagues.

Abusers can be neighbors, friends and family members and can be found in any other place children gather. Abusers can be and often are other children. About 90% of children who are victims of abuse know their abuser. Only 10% of sexually abused children are abused by a stranger. Approximately 30% of children who are sexually abused are abused by family members. The youger the victim, the more likely it is that the abuser is a family member. About 60% of children sexually abused are abused by the people the family trusts.

An interesting fact is that most adolescent sex offenders are not sexual predators and will not go on to become adult offenders. Most adolescent offenders do not meet the criteria for pedophilia and do not continue to exhibit sexually predatory behaviors. Adolescent offenders are more responsive to treatment than adults. They do not continue to re-offend into adulthood, especially when provided with appropriate treatment.

Another fact is that not everyone who sexually abuses children is a pedophile. Child sexual abuse is perpetrated by a wide range of individuals with diverse motivations. It is impossible to identify specific characteristics that are common to all those who molest children.

Situational offenders tend to offend at times of stress and begin offending later than pedophilic offenders. They also have fewer victims, often family, and a general preference for adult partners.

Pedophilic offenders start offending at an early age, and often have a large number  of victims, frequently not family members.

Another interesting fact is as many as 40% of children who are sexually abused are abused by older children, or more powerful children. The youger the child victim, the more likely it is that the perpetrator is a juvenile. Juveniles are the offenders in 43% of assaults on children under six. Of these offenders 14% are under age 12. Juveniles who commit sex offenses against other children are more likely than adult offenders to offend in groups and to offend in schools.

The number of youth coming to the attention of the police for sex offenses increases sharply at age 12 and plateaus after age 14.  A small number of juvenile offenders, one out of eight, are younger than 12. Females constitute 7% of juveniles who commit sex offenses.

If you would like to know more about polygamy, forced child marriages, abuse of children in polygamous colonies and beliefs, you should read the authors award winning and nominated book LINKED IN THE BOOK COVER BELOW.

The Issue of Child Sexual Abuse
What is child sexual abuse?
FACT: The definition of child sexual abuse is broader than most people realize.
Often a traumatic experience for children and teens, child sexual abuse is a criminal offense punishable by law in many societies.

Child sexual abuse includes:
• any sexual act between an adult and a minor, or between two minors, when one exerts power over the other.

• forcing, coercing or persuading a child to engage in any type of sexual act.

• non-contact acts such as exhibitionism, exposure to pornography, voyeurism, and communicating in a sexual manner by phone or Internet.

What is the magnitude of the problem?

FACT: Child sexual abuse is far more prevalent than most people realize.

• Child sexual abuse is likely the most prevalent health problem children face with the most serious array of consequences.

• About one in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.

• About one in seven little girls sexual and one in 25 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18.

• This year, there will be about 400,000* babies born in the U.S. that will become victims of child sexual abuse unless we do something to stop it.  Includes contact abuse only.

FACT: Identified incidents of child sexual abuse are declining, although there is no clear indication of a cause.

• The number of identified incidents of child sexual abuse decreased at least 47% from 1993 to 2005-2006.

FACT: Even with declining rates of sexual abuse, the public is not fully aware of the magnitude of the problem.

• The primary reason is that only about 38% of child victims disclose the fact that they have been sexually abused.  Some never disclose.

• There are also privacy issues surrounding cases of child sexual abuse. For instance, public police reports do not name the victim, and most media concerns have a policy that precludes naming victims.

FACT: Most people think of adult rape as a crime of great proportion and significance, and are unaware that children are victimized at a much higher rate than adults especially little girls sexual abuse.

• Nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults (including assaults on adults) occur to children ages 17 and under.9,10Youths have higher rates of sexual assault victimization than do adults. In 2000, the rate for youths aged 12 to 17 was 2.3 times higher than for adults.

• 44% of rapes with penetration occur to children under age 18. Victims younger than 12 accounted for 15% of those raped, and another 29% of rape victims were between 12 and 17.

This writers interests are broader than Polygamy, child abuse and child sexual molesters, I am against child sexual abuse of any nature and not just with child brides in polygamy. I am also interested in the continual buildup of the military industrial complex, its budget and our continual involvement in wars that do not affect our national security. It bothers me that we spend more on defense than the next 10 countries combined.  Subsequently my blogs lie mostly in these areas.

I have some interests in the area of child sexual molesters as having seen the effects within a friend’s family and their daughter and having had a similar experience in my own family involving a grand daughter. These experiences, many times involve someone you would never suspect. It coud be a stepfather, a friend of the family and even a minister or a school teacher. It is usualy a gradual involvement where the perpetrator gains the confidence of the child and in some cases even the confidence of the parents and then proceeds to make overtures such as touching, etc.

I recently read an article that explored several common myths about child sexual molesters and I would like to discuss some of these myths.

Myth #1:  Normal-appearing, well educated, middle-class people do not molest children.

Recent reports of abuse by priests have shown, child sexual molesters rely on our misassumptions to deliberately and carefully set and gain access to child victims.  According to DR. Ann Saler, PHD, an expert in sex offenders, “a double life is prevalent among all types of sex offenders. The front usually offered to the world is usually a good person, someone the community believes has a good character and would never do such a thing.”  Many seek  prominent positions that place them in close proximaty with children. They can charm, be likeable and radiate sincerity which causes parents to drop their guard. In my friend’s case, a co-worker and leader in the church made friends with the father and family and paid attentions to the 12-13 year old daughter. He eventually kidnapped the daughter and took her to Mexico before being located after three months. In my case, my grand daugher was molested by her fanatically religious step father, who was bent on separating myself and my wife from our daughter and her children because we were of a different religion. A neighbor lady noticed blood on my grand daughters clothing and called the police. He spent 5 years in prison for his actions for being a child sexual molestor.

Myth #2: People are to quick to believe that the accused is innocent even if there is supporting evidence.

It is hard for most people to imagine how any person could do such a heinous act. They assume child sexual molesters must be monsters and that the accused is incapable of such act. Therefore if the accused appears to be normal they will disbelieve the allegation.

Myth #3: Child SEXUAL molesters molest indiscriminately.

Not everyone that comes in contact with a child abuser will be abused. Research with sex offenders confirms that they carefully select and groom their victims. Child sexual molesters most often chose children who had family problems, were alone, lacked confidence. and were indiscriminate in their trust of others, especially when the child was perceived to be pretty, provocatively dressed, young or small. Rather than being a sudden, initially traumatic experience, most sex abuse involves a gradual grooming process in which the molester skillfully manipulates the child  into participating. To ensure the childs continuing compliance, offenders use bribes, threats and force. There is a process of obtaining the childs friendship and obtaining the parents friendship and trust. When you get their trust that is when a child becomes vulnerable.

There are other myths such as:

4- Children who are abused would immediately tell their parents.

The fact victims fail to disclose their abuse in a timely fashion is frquently used as evidence that the victim’s story should be doubted. Research shows that children have considerale difficulty in revealing or discussing their abuse.

5- Children who are being abused will show physical evidence of abuse. Not necessarily.

6-If asked about abuse, children tend to exaggerate and are prone to making false accusations.

Research shows that children often minimize and deny, rather than embellish what has happened to them. Even with police and therepists questioning, research finds that children are quite reluctant to discuss embarrasing events. Lab research using suggestive questioning has consistantly shown that negative events, especially events involving  a child’s genitals, are relatively difficult to implant in children’s statements.

Polygamy Girls Impact Child brides who are underage and not legal brides or women. Child brides face huge challenges as a result of being married as children. Isolated, often with their freedom curtailed, polygamy girls

frequently feel disempowered and deprived of their fundamental rights to health, education and safety. Neither are they physically nor emotionally ready to become wives or mothers. Polygamy Girls who become Child brides  are at a greater risk of experiencing dangerous complications in pregnancy and childbirth. They are at risk of contacting AIDS and suffering domestic violence. Polygamy Girls are often forced into marriage at ages 13-15 and sometimes earlier, with no choice of a husband and usually to an older man four times their age. With little access to education and economic opportunities, they and their families are more likely to live in poverty. Communities and nations also feel the impact of polygamous marriages and polygamy girls impact child brides.

The basic structue of polygamy is authoritarian and secretive. The men who practice it believe they have the authority to govern and control their wives and children. Polygamous groups are referred to as cults because they are usually a small or narrow circle of persons united by devotion or allegiance to some program or system of beliefs generally accepted as unothodox. There are certain elements of cults such as (1) doctrinal teachings and practices, which  because of their emotional, physical or sexual nature would be judged as harmful (2) cooertion or force by leaders to ensure complience with rules of the society (3) secrecy to preserve isolation and prevent influence from the outside.

All contol belongs to a central figure usually referred to as ‘the prophet’. The cental figure in the marriage is the husband. The child is responible to his/her father and he in turn is responsible to the prophet. The prophet, through the father, controls when and to whom the polygamy girls will marry, the places where the child will work and for how long. Also, how much education the children receive and for what purpose. The children’s status is also determined by the prophet as well as the town and house they will live in. In a polygamous cult, the prophet can take a child’s father or mother away and reassign him or her to new parents if he chooses. He can also determine the rules of the society in which his followers live, and change them at will without any explanation.

For example, in the FLDS cult headquartered in Colorado City on the Utah Arizona border, at the present time men are not allowed to have sex with their wives. This is due to the fact that their leader Warren Jeffs is in prison due to marrying underage polygamy girls to himself and others. Becuse he is unable to have sex with any of his wives he has ordered others in his group cannot have sex with their spouses. He has set apart a group of men to have sex with the wives in the group when they are ovulating to ensure pregnancy. The men wear hoods so they cannot be recognized and the husband must watch the whole procedure.  These men are known as seed bearers.

Also in order to make sure the men in the community have access to finding additional wives, young boys in the community are expelled from the community. This way there is little competition for men to marry young polygamy girls. The men look to the young polygamy girls because most of the older polygamy girls are already married due to polygamous practices.  Polygamous men have to look to the young girls or find a wife in the outside world and convert her. Meanwhile, the boys with no experience in the outside world and little experience or education are dropped off in the desert to fend for themselves. They often turn to prostitution or drug dealing in order to support themselves.

Independant thinking and outside information are shunned. The followers should not think independantly or be exposed to outside information as that might lead them away from the true path as outlined by the prophet. The fathers in the group are to be respected but the mothers are only to be obeyed if they are in perfect harmony with the father and the prophet. A child should never seek information other than what is offered by the leader, and this is to be accepted implicitly. In fact children are not given information pertaining to the outside world. No free expression is allowed if it is different than what the leaders teach.  Also relationships with others outside the cult are prohibited. There are no exceptions to this as children are not allowed to see any family members outside the cult. Most literature is prohibited and all other races and belief systems have no value, and therefore there is no need to learn about them.

There are extremely young  girls in this country, child brides arranged marriage who are forced into marriage and given CHILD BRIDES ARRANGED MARRIAGEno choice of when or whom to marry. This is true, particularly among the religious polygamous sects in Utah, Ariona and surrounding states. The largest of such groups is the one ruled by Warren Jeffs, with it’s headquarters on the Utah Arizona border commonly referred to as Short Creek or Colorado City. Warren is presently seving a prison term for marrying young underage girls and for giving young girls in marriage to others, child brides arranged marriage usually to older men who are known for serving Warren faithfully without complaints. The Warren Jeffs group is known as the FLDS or Fundamentalist Latter-day Saints Church, a breakoff group from the Mormon Church. When the Mormon Church abandonned the Practice of Polygamy in the 1890s, those who would not accept the new ruling left the Church or were eventually excommunicated and later formed new groups such as the FLDS.  Another such group is the Apostolic Brethren Group in Bluffdale, Utah a suburb of Salt Lake City. The FLDS group is more known for marrying off young girls. Should you want to know more about these groups and their beliefs I would suggest the authors award winning and Pulitzer nominated book, THE POWER OF POLYGAMY, at Amazon.  CLICK BOOK COVER BELOW

CHILD BRIDES ARRANGED MARRIAGEThe control of sex and sexuality are at the heart of marriage and thus early and child marriage. Underlying the practice  of CEFM (child, early and forced marriage) is the control of women  and girl’s lives by families and communities, particularly the control of their sexual and reproductive lives.

Poverty has long been said to be the foremost reason for CEFM. But if this is the case then why are not boys getting married earlier same as girls? Sexuality and gender are central concerns of early and child marriage. Yet these issues are not explored.

The social and cultural construction of sexuality and its emphasis on subordination, determines when and whom girls marry, as well as many conditions of marital life for girls and women.

Decisions about sexuality, relationships and reproduction are some of the most important an individual can make. CEFM prevents millions of girls from making these decisions for themselves. In fact , marrying a girl simply transfers the control of her sexuality to others. Fathers and other family members are replaced by husbands and in-laws, who assess a girl in terms of the physical and reproductive labor she brings to the new family. They believe that a girl does not have the right to make sexual decisions.

Why are families so into the close management of a girl’s sexuality. More than any other group, girls identity and lifes choices are defined by expectations regarding their sexual roles and behavior. The proper management  of these roles can often determine a girl’s success in life.

Parents often cite fear of premarital sex, pregnancy out of wedlock and sexual violence as reasons for marrying girls as children, as any of these reasons could bring shame upon a girl and her family.

RELIGION CHILD ABUSEDOES THE EVANGELICAL RIGHT TAKE DISCIPLINING CHILDREN TO A NEW LEVEL?  RELIGION CHILD ABUSE  The bible says spare the rod and spoil the child. Do the evangelicals take this too far? In other words, are they espousing more than just spankings? What do they consider a spanking and when should it be administered?

Some say there is a brutal movement in America legitamizing child abuse in the name of God. This involves books written by Evangelical leaders on child rearing, advocating spanking and even beatings. Do some evangelical religions foster child abuse in the name of religion?

Some of the leaders in question and their books are as follows:

Michael and Debi Pearl authors of ‘To trian up a child.”

James Dobson author of “Dare to Discipline & The Strong Willed Child .”

Bill Gothard is the founder of the Institute in Basic Life Principles in Illinois which promotes  Christian home :education program.

Dobson likes being recognized by the powerful Republican Elite and was President George W Bush’s chief religious adviser. He also appeared as a guest on Larry King making a case for Bush’s invasion of Iraq.  It has been proven there were no WMDs in Iraq and Bush was aware of the fact.

If you would like to read further on the abuses fostered by some far right evangelical leaders, including those mentioned in the above paragraphs Click here.

I am not advocating spankings should never be administered. However, in those rare cases when a parent feels a child needs punishment, a spanking should not leave bruises, cuts or broken bones. I am personally against beatings and spanking of infants. I feel an adult should not be angry when administering punishment and after punishment  a greater amount of love should be shown toward the child.

Religion Child Abuse Emotional Harm

There are other ways a child can be injured in a religion. Some teachings can cause a child to be depressed and suffer emotionally. A former fundamentalist minister explained why he quit the ministry and left his fundamentalist church. While eight years old, he heard his minister say that bad people and those who do not believe in Jesus, will burn in hell for eternity. He was also taught  women were second class citizens and gays would go to hell. From then on, his biggest worry was he might go to hell and burn forever. Even as a minister his biggest worry was he might do something or say something which would cause him to go to hell. Today, when asked if he believed in hell, he says yes, he was there for several years. He further stated the fundamentalist religion has a way of causing even good people to do bad things becuse of some of the teachings, even though people in the religion are basically good. His advice was for parents to examine their religious beliefs and think deeply about what they are doing to their children. If your religion causes you to do bad things and hurts your children, then you should reexamine your religion and your beliefs.

There are other forms of abuse in religion. Some religions teach, anyone who does not speak in tongues will not go to heaven and even discouage their members from associating with family members who are not of their religion. Children do not understand why they cannot see or spend time with their grandparents or other family members.

There are other religions who do not believe in taking medications and seeking medical care. They would let there child die rather than seek medical help in religion child abuse. They believe God will cure them or it was meant to be.

I believe in Christianity and feel there is great deal of good coming from it’s teachings. Love and service to God and our fellow beings is the primary tennant of Christianity. I do not believe in a literal place called hell where one burns for eternity. I believe hell is a state of mind and the Savior will lift and redeem his people. Religions who do not dwell on repentance, restitution and forgiveness have misinterpreted some of the scriptures in the Bible. They have added hell, fire and damnation to their teachings to scare people into accepting their form of religion.

Love your children and if you feel that a punishment should be administered do not injure them. Do not administer the punishment in anger and after the punishment show forth a greater amount of love.
